# Connect your client

> Point your MCP client at the AutoCAD MCP Server on your workstation.

Any MCP client that runs local MCP servers can use the server, including Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot in VS Code. ChatGPT connects only to MCP servers on the internet, so it cannot reach a server on your workstation.

## Clients the installer sets up

The installer adds the server to Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code when they are installed for your Windows user. Restart the client after installing to see it.

## Any other client

The server is `%LOCALAPPDATA%\PlantEngineer\mcp\plnt-acad.exe`. Run it with `config` to print the entry for your computer, with the full path filled in:

```powershell theme={null}
& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\PlantEngineer\mcp\plnt-acad.exe" config
```

Add the entry to your client's MCP configuration:

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "plantengineer-autocad": {
      "command": "C:\\Users\\<you>\\AppData\\Local\\PlantEngineer\\mcp\\plnt-acad.exe"
    }
  }
}
```

Use the AI provider your company has already approved; the server does not choose a model for you.

## Check the connection

1. Start AutoCAD and open a drawing.
2. Open your MCP client and confirm that the PlantEngineer server and its tools are listed.
3. Ask a read-only question about the open drawing, such as which layers it has.

## Read-only or full access

Agents have full access by default: your MCP client asks you before each change, script, or deletion. To let agents only read drawings, click **AI: Full access** on the PlantEngineer ribbon tab, which switches it to **AI: Read-only**, or type `PLNT.AGENT` and choose **ReadOnly**. The setting stays until you change it.

When several AutoCAD windows are open, the agent works in the one where you last switched drawings, unless it picks one from the list of running AutoCAD sessions.
